Isle of Skye

Legendary scenery, famous landmarks and the kind of road trip moments people travel across the world to experience.

Skye is one of Scotland’s great bucket-list destinations, and for good reason. This is the island of the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, Fairy Glen, Fairy Pools, Portree’s colourful harbour and Dunvegan Castle — a place of famous landmarks, dramatic roads and the kind of scenery that more than lives up to the hype.

It is best experienced as a journey rather than a checklist. Allowing 2 to 4 days gives you time to enjoy the main route at a proper pace, take in the best-known sights, and leave room for the weather, the light and the spontaneous stops that so often become the highlight of Skye.

One Skye Loop, four distinct journeys

Gateway to Skye

Skye’s Most Iconic Drive

Portree → Uig (via Trotternish east coast)

A northbound stretch of iconic landscapes, dramatic viewpoints and some of Skye’s most recognisable scenery.

The Wild North West

Uig → Dunvegan (west side return)

A quieter return through Skye’s remote and rugged interior, with open scenery and a slower, wilder rhythm.

From Dunvegan to the Bridge

Dunvegan to Kyle of Lochalsh via Sligachan & Broadford

A sweeping drive beneath the Cuillin mountains, reconnecting with Skye’s main route.

Optional Detours Worth Taking

Optional side journeys to some of Skye’s most memorable coastal viewpoints, mountain settings and quieter corners.

Dunvegan → Coral Beach

Coral Beach & Dunvegan Coast

A peaceful coastal spur to one of Skye’s most unique and unexpectedly tropical-looking beaches.

To Skye’s Wild Western Edge

Dunvegan → Neist Point Lighthouse

A striking westward detour to Skye’s most iconic lighthouse and dramatic Atlantic cliffs.

To the Edge of the Cuillin

Elgol & the Black Cuillin

A short but unforgettable detour from Broadford to one of Skye’s most dramatic coastal viewpoints.

Fairy Pools Under the Black Cuillin

Sligachan → Fairy Pools

A short but iconic detour from Sligachan into the heart of the Cuillin and one of Skye’s most famous natural sights.
