BEFORE YOU SET OFF

The Weather Doesn't Make the Journey. It Shapes It.

Four seasons in a day? Absolutely.

On Scotland’s west coast, sunshine, rain, mist and dramatic skies can all arrive before lunch. Pack well, embrace whatever the day brings, and you’ll discover that some of the West Coast 300’s most unforgettable moments happen when the weather refuses to follow the forecast.

Changeable by Nature

Conditions can change quickly, sometimes dramtically. Clear skies today, misty mountains tomorrow.

Beauty in every condition

Moody skies, low cloud and rain create unforgettable landscapes, dramatic light and fewer crowds. Some of the best days are in the worst weather.

Pack for all eventualities

Layers, waterproofs and sturdy footwear are your best friends when out walking. Be ready for sun, rain, wind and everything in between.

Any time is a good time

There's no bad season to explore the WC300. With a milder climate than the north highlands, every season works well on the WC300.

Sunshine

Warm sunshine and blue skies make Scotland look like an entirely different country — the lochs turn silver-blue, the hills lose their haze, and views that are moody on a grey day become some of the best in Britain.

Rain

Steady rain has its own kind of beauty here — lochs turn glassy and dark, forests deepen in colour, and empty roads and quiet viewpoints are yours alone while everyone else waits it out.

Wind

Wind sweeps straight off the Atlantic and across open moorland — clouds move fast, sea lochs whip into whitecaps, and the drama of the landscape is never more obvious than on a blustery day.

Mist

Mist and low cloud soften the hills into layers and hide the tops of the highest peaks — it’s when the Highlands feel most mysterious, and when castles, lochs, and viewpoints take on the moody, atmospheric look this route is known for.

Aurora

This route runs through some of Scotland’s genuine dark sky areas, where on clear nights the Aurora Borealis can flicker green and sometimes pink across the sky over lochs and hills — one of the rarest, most memorable reasons to stay out after dark.
